SJI: FakeIndieLabel Poster Exhibition (2008)

I had almost forgotten I had this... FakeIndieLabel the local promoters and record label had an exhibition of their gig posters at The Newcastle Arts Centre a couple of years ago. I hadn't known anything about it and only popped in by chance to get some art supplies when the exhibition was on. It was pretty exciting to find that gigs that we had played at were part of this, and I popped back the next day to take some video footage. I didn't have much memory left, so it's a bit of a whistle-stop tour. I also think it was 2008, but am happy to be corrected.

SJI: WOOSH Flexi, The Boy Who Crossed The Street (1989)

There's a Blog called I Wish I Was A Flexidisc that features, well, flexidiscs and one of the ones available for download is SJI's The Boy Who Crossed The Street from 1989.

Here's the Blog:
http://iwishiwasaflexidisc.blogspot.com/

and here's a link straight to the SJI page:
http://iwishiwasaflexidisc.blogspot.com/search/label/St.%20James%20Infirmary
Hmm... on closer inspection, the link to the download is now dead. If there's a call for it, I'll upload it somewhere myself.

Upcoming gig - Sunday 9th October.

Puppy Fat + St. James Infirmary
The Central, Gateshead
Sunday 9th October 2011

As a tribute to the legendary Newcastle Riverside, the legendary Puppy Fat and the legendary SJI combine to recreate those heady days of yore. In legendary Riverside fashion, this could perhaps be considered a Not The Tusk Festival, as it's on at the same time. In fact, as we're Tusk ticketholders, SJI are going to have to leave the festival and upsticks across the river to bring rock to the kids. Sadly SJI weren't invited to play Tusk itself, which is a shame as our attempt at the entire Fleetwood Mac album would surely have been a highlight.

This is not one of the official Riverside book launch events, but I think the book will be available to buy at the gig.

More about the Riverside book here, and here.

For a mere £2.99 you can buy a .pdf document of the complete Riverside listings from here.

SJI - Star and Shadow - 08 - Matty Cabbage House

Review:
http://thenorthernline.com/2010/01/15/st-james-infirmary-at-the-star-and-shadow-jan-2010/

St. James Infirmary at the Star and Shadow jan 2010 by Tony
Heres a band that have the mark of years of effort and toil at the coal face of the business we call ‘show’, the stress and strain showing on creased brow and angst ridden faces, studied fashionistas, they look like they have walked off the set of ‘this years model‘ as they pose and sneer at the crowd.………….NOT!
Despite having gigged for the best part of 35yrs, Gary and the rest of the band act as if this is the first gig they ever did with a load of mates watching in the youth club, this is obviously still a fun thing for them to do! Starting the night with a walk around the (packed) venue handing out party poppers and whistles to complete strangers, its then not that clear whether the band have started or it’s a sound check/tune up…but then they riff gradually into a rant song about some poor fellow called Richard Carter, and with consecutive and increasingly insulting and aggressive (but very funny) songs they tear this poor bloke up. Who is he?? I don’t know but he had better stay away from SJI .It’s a so so refreshing change to see a band who genuinely get up to play with experimentation and abandon, pulling the audience into a spirit of fun and punk ethos, no worry whether the underpants are the right make and showing the correct amount of arse crack here, fashion doesn’t count for SJI now, and I suspect it never has.
‘Eight for a Fiver’ is a more northern (and punk) version of John Shuttleworth, a diatribe against the peasant culture of north east towns, or is a celebration? The band then show a bit more of their depth with a folkie blues song ’old fashioned arms’, maybe a bit slacker than it could have been, (they had put a poster up apologising for lack of practice!) but sung with real meaning and a nice change of pace.
Then its all over, a broken amp finishing proceedings, but no one leaves the stage and banter all round precedes Mr Lang wandering off, and then returning, like a lost care home resident, slowly starting at a ramshackle version of ‘Matty Cabbage House‘, various instruments gathering the pace and with a ‘road runner’ type feel the song rolls along picking up the crowd with it. 10 or is it 20 minutes later, its all over…..and I feel like I was part of it.

SJI: Almanac Review

Forgive them the Viz like title for their Christmas ditty and celebrate a whole year of free CDs that they have been sending out to their fans. I include myself in that. ST JAMES INFIRMARY are from that small northumbrian mining village called Ashington. And they have been going a long, long, time. I first came across them in about 1986/87 back in the Wansbeck Music Collective. They were led then, as they are now, by the irrespressible G W Lang (Gary to his friends). I actually got to see them a few times back then and still have some of the cassettes that they used to give away at gigs. Fast forward to 2009 and they have come back onto my radar. They have been giving away a CD each month for a year. Their ALMANAC began back in January and has just been completed with a special Christmas package. Almanac 2.10 and 2.11 popped through my letterbox with a special Christmas CD  entitled; Almanac 2.12 (Christmas) smells like fanny juice.

Almanac 2.10 contains their last set of new tunes for the year. All Dead Rock Stars is a superb opener but my favourite is the Byrds like Death Cars of the Rich and Famous. 2.11 is a DVD of their recent gig at the Cumberland Arms in Newcastle. If you can get passed Garys swearing, he puts rude kid to shame!!! He really should know better at his age!!! You will get a feel for their live experience. The best track, in my opinion, is the superb Matty Cabbage House which mixes the C86 shambling sound of the Pastels with the lyrics of  Half Man, Half Biscuit. Eight for a Fiver is a song in love with cheap carry-outs and the Fall. It can be found in studio version on Almanac 2.05. Red Coo Coo is also an old favourite from Almanac 2.01. The lyrics are superb and full of northern wit. Young People: F*** Off with its tales of invalid cars and home helps will have you in stitches. As well as the gig there is film of the soundcheck including a great version of Back to the Bar Stool. Finally their Christmas number. Not my cup of tea, but hey it all adds to the legend that is St James Infirmary. Check them out at www.myspace.com/thestjamesinfirmary. Get in touch and I am sure they will send you some stuff. Go see them live and don’t be offended by Garys swearing. As one of their many fans commented “Better than the new Flaming Lips LP”. Praise indeed.

SJI: A Sound Is A Sound (LP, 2008)

The Homemade LoFi Psych blog posted an SJI album for free download back in 2008. This album consists of improvised Psychedelic/Krautrock pieces that we conjured up during rehersals for the Distraction Weekender Cluny gig.

Considering these are live-to-minidisc (with only one or two overdubs here and there) the sound quality is really good. I also think that the quality of the actual music is pretty good, considering it was all made up on the spot. So yes, there are bum notes and wayward ideas, but if you can see past them, there's a good deal to enjoy here.
